Background
Dr James Wong is a Medical Retina Ophthalmologist and Eye Surgeon, specialising in disorders of the eye, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, central serous chorioretinopathy and cataract surgery.
Dr Wong graduated from the University of Sydney and completed his specialist ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital, gaining Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists in 2005. He undertook additional overseas fellowships in the United Kingdom, including a Cataract Surgery and Retina Fellowship at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, and subspeciality Medical Retinal and Uveitis Fellowships at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.
Dr Wong has an interest in clinical and basic science research and was awarded a Master of Medicine for laboratory research into inflammatory aspects of macular degeneration. He has presented papers at Australian and international meetings and is a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sydney.
Dr Wong is an experienced and respected clinician and is committed to providing patients with access to cutting-edge treatments and technology, including in clinical trials. He has been principal investigator on multiple international therapeutic trials for macular and retinal disorders for over a decade.
He is also a Consultant Staff Specialist in the Medical Retina Unit at Sydney Eye Hospital and enjoys teaching ophthalmology registrars and Fellows in the outpatient clinic and operating theatre. He is involved regularly with the education of medical students, optometrists and general practitioners. He is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retina Specialists, the American Society of Retina Specialists and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr Wong places a strong emphasis on good communication with patients in order to promote effective health outcomes.
